When I hear coffee house, the mind goes to various types of coffee and pastry - not Mexican food. Yet, here we are. Yes, coffee is served here. But it's full of other non-caffeinated offerings. The building is obviously a relic - that adds to the charm. There are a lot of nooks & crannies with places to sit. Present are the typical NM dishes - burritos, tacos, enchiladas, carne adovado, and soups. Lots to choose from so it's the Combo Plate - huge burrito, taco and hidden somewhere in between a cheese enchilada. Carne Adovada for my partner in crime. Food came out quick and hot, with a couple of thick flour tortillas (not a fan I prefer thin). In typical NM fashion we got a lot of food. Spicy but not over done. We stopped early saving room for a Frontier Cinnamon. Unfortunately (or maybe not) they were sold out. Great lunch and glad we stopped

I popped in here because it was about a 3 minute walk from my airbnb. I thought it was a coffee shop but quickly discovered it's much much more than that. Barelas Coffee House is definitely a local spot and yet everyone was so friendly there that I felt like one of the locals! Usually I'm too anxious to eat alone but I'd eat alone again there in a heartbeat. I ordered a vanilla cap and while the cap was definitely more a latte it definitely beats the coffee at my airbnb. I also got a green chile burger. If you know me you know I don't eat burgers. I took a chance and it paid off because I'd eat this burger again (and I rarely crave burgers). The fries were also crispy. A cute little hole in the wall. A diamond in the rough.
